Looking back in retrospect at 2018, MDO has found the three biggest downfalls for high schoolers. Tide Pods, AirPods, and JUUL Pods. Each pod demonstrates a different way students’ learning can be compromised and all three have been discussed many times by administration.

The Tide Pod was a major trend at the beginning of 2018. “The Tide Pod Challenge” began going viral around the U.S. This challenge had kids eat an entire Tide Pod. This pure stupidity shows that trends in modern times make people do things that can intentionally lead to internal physical damage and sometimes even death. The Tide Pod is a representation of detrimental trends that teenagers follow.

The AirPod is a major distraction for teenagers in school. The small mechanism fits perfectly in your ear and is very easy to hide underneath your hair, a hat, a hood, and many other things. The Madison High School administration has had to hold meeting with the school to inform their students that hiding AirPods under your hair or hood is now against school policies and will result in some type of consequence. The secret music playing in students’ ears while simultaneously trying to learn is a huge distraction and can negatively influence people’s grades.

Lastly, the infamous JUUL Pod. Students do not understand the negative consequences of Juuling. And no, Juuling is not “better for you” than cigarettes. In fact, one Juul Pod is the equivalent of 20 cigarettes worth of nicotine. JUUL’s have not been around long enough to show what the long term affect is on the people using them.

Students think these three small devices are all small issues, but in reality, they are all major issues. Just because they are physically small, does not mean the long term effect will be minor.
