It’s no secret to anyone who’s played video games for awhile that Bethesda has always been known as that reliable “buddy” company, who doesn’t produce much content, but when they do their acclaimed masterpieces, like 2011’s “Skyrim”. For a long time Bethesda has stood out among the, shall we say, “evil empires” like the infamous EA, known for numerous paywalls and DLC’s, ripe with what would normally just be in-game content. Unfortunately for many long time video game lovers, as the trend of loot boxes, microtransactions, and paywalls have become more popular, Bethesda has also joined the ranks of this previously unthinkable business practice, and the future for all Bethesda fans is starting to look dark as the days go on.

Fallout 76 was an ambitious project by Bethesda, announced in the wake of the Fallout 4 success, which, by itself, was considered a small disappointment by many of the long-term Fallout fans. Regardless of personal feelings about Fallout 4, the main focus here is on Fallout 76, an open world multiplayer game to use and expand on Fallout 4’s engine and mechanics in the wasteland of West Virginia. Rolling along the smooth country roads, fans and newcomers alike prepared themselves for the multiplayer experience of a lifetime, with crafting, camp building, quests, gunfights, and many more thrilling and immersive features. Unfortunately, Fallout 76 was very, very far from what people expected.

Upon release, reviews started racking up, bugs were found, and angry videos plagued the internet with people seriously regretting the money they had spent on the game. Expectations for immersive quests were met with pointers leading from one boring goose chase to the next, huge bugs broke the whole game for many people, and for those unfortunate enough to be able to move from their spawn, were met with an empty world, devoid of npc’s, buggy pve fights, terrible pvp fights, and the all too common full server crash to be the only saving grace from this disaster of a “game”. Bethesda had tried to come out from their “paid mods” ideas for Fallout 4 and managed to create a disgusting mess of a project, which still contained microtransactions.

Among the huge failure of a project which never should have even met the eye of the public, Bethesda fans remember what followed the announcement of the disasterpiece: a short teaser for Bethesda’s next addition to their flagship series “The Elder Scrolls 6”. I’ve personally been playing Elder Scrolls games since the old days of TES 4 and having played through the beauty of TES 5 as well, it’s a huge pain for me to doubt the abilities of this company as they take us into TES 6. Though not much has been revealed so far, we already know that the new Elder Scrolls game will run on the same engine that’s powered Bethesda games since 1999, and looking at the terrible graphics of the recent Fallout games, it’s not hard to see how hard stellar gameplay would be to save the game from creative stall in 2018, let alone in the following 3 or 4 years until release. Unfortunately, as much as I’d love to say “graphics aren’t everything” it’s hard with Bethesda’s recent moves to even expect half decent gameplay anymore.

Being a pessimist is never fun, but the world of Bethesda games isn’t looking up as of right now.
