Simran Karnik is a junior at MHS, currently on an exchange from India. Her experience here has given her a sense of what American culture is like while sharing aspects of her own culture with our school; Simran opened this year’s Talent Show with an incredible traditional Indian dance, one of the most impressive and interesting acts of the night. Throughout her exchange, Simran has experienced first-hand what it’s like to be an American high schooler, so MDO sat down with her to get her opinions on the living and studying in the US, giving a perspective of our familiar society through a unique lens.

MDO: What do you like most about living in the US?

SK: I like the way you guys hang out with friends and family. The lifestyle is different from India. That’s what I like: the lifestyle.

MDO: What surprised you most about the US?

SK: The school system in the US surprised me. In India, we have uniforms, but here students can wear whatever they want.

MDO: What is your hometown like? How does it compare to Madison?

SK: My hometown is like Madison: sweet and simple. In my opinion, Madison is clean.

MDO: Your talent show act was really impressive. What other parts of Indian culture do you think Americans should learn more about?

SK: I think the students at Madison High School should learn about my culture and its meaning, especially the hand movements in dance.

MDO: What experience(s) would you like to take back to India with you?

SK: I have experienced a lot of cool stuff like music, dance, the American lifestyle, and most importantly songs; American songs are so good, I love them! I also made a lot of really good friends here.

MDO: Thank you for answering our questions, Simran, we appreciate it!
