What is cricket? Many at Madison High do not know how cricket is played or what the actual point of the game is. But all Madison High students agree that they love playing Coach Lynott’s version of the game called “Crazy Cricket.” Coach Lynott’s enthusiasm for obscure sports has sparked an interest from the freshman class to start a crazy cricket tournament. Each team consisted of six to seven people who played a two or three-inning game during lunch. Coach Lynott’s version of cricket consists of the whole team batting, underhand bowling, and outs occurring when the ball or bat hits the wicket. Then there are the rules that are special for the famous MHS gym- style game; hitting the back wall on the fly earns six points, on the roll equals four points, and through the gym divider equals two points. If the ball hits the ceiling it is an automatic out. If a batter just gets a simple hit that does not hit anything, the batter has to get on his/her horse and run to either wall and return to the wicket before the bowler/pitcher has a chance to hit it with the ball. This rule forces many batters to dive and hit the ball before it hits the wicket. Teammates were seen encouraging their fellow brethren to give up their bodies in order to reach a higher score. As faces smooshed against the gym floor teammates cheered because the bat had made contact with the ball before it hit the wicket.

Many of the teams came out with matching uniforms and had pregame dances. The finals took place on Wednesday, March 26th in the main gym. The game was between Kubik’s Losers and the Silver Bullets. Both teams had very good bowlers which left the scores relatively close. The Silver Bullets came out strong in the 1st inning but the couldn’t outlast the speed and strength of Kubik’s Losers. The Losers pulled off the victory with a score of 55 to 46. This year’s cricket tournament has been a great success and will definitely become one of the high school’s favorite gym sport tournaments.
